Chapter 4: Burning Rubber

The next morning all the villagers were outside Kayla’s home. Thomas and the crew, now including Kayla, sat on the balcony trying to plot escape. “We were overlooking the fact that you are a witch,” the mayor said, “But harboring pirates in your home? That we cannot overlook.”

“Don’t forget to add that she joined said pirates.” Thomas said interrupting. He turned around to the rest of them and whispered. “So what are we going to do?”

Danny shook his head. “We need to escape. Someway, somehow, we need to get as far away from here as possible.”

“I vote we throw Thomas at them and say we were his prisoners.” Chelsea suggested.

“I was hoping…” Kayla bit her lip. “That we could somehow steal a ship to get leave, but now it seems that’s not an option. But I do have one good idea.” She stood up and started to run into the house. “We have to get to the roof.”

Thomas and Chelsea both jumped from the balcony and used their powers to reach the roof. Danny followed Kayla through the house and up some stairs. “So what is this plan?” Danny asked impatiently.

The only thing on the roof was a giant basket. Thomas and Chelsea were sitting in it. “Danny, Danny look. A giant basket.” Thomas said like an excited child.

Chelsea smiled wryly. “I know what she’s planning. Just sit in the basket.” Danny did as Chelsea said. “Ok, now hurry up Kay.” Kayla nodded and ran back into the house.

Several minutes later Kayla came back with a large bag slung over her shoulder. She put it in the basket and the hopped in. “Thomas, stretch your arms and legs to wrap around the four handles around the basket. And then stretch your body as flat and wide as you can. Kind of like a balloon.” Thomas and Danny looked at her strangely. “Just do it.” Thomas stretched his body just as she said. “Now Danny, sit in the middle of the basket and hold your hand out like someone is giving you something, and create a decent sized flame in them.” With a strange look Danny did as he was told too. Kayla rummaged through the books in her bag. She pulled one out and started reading an ancient text. She held it open with one hand and the other hand was pointed towards Danny’s. Suddenly wind mysteriously started to swirl the flames in circles under Thomas’ stomach. Slowly the flames rose more and more and so did Thomas’ and the basket with him.

“I get it now.” Danny said pleased.

“Chelsea, climb on top of Thomas and tell me which direction to head in.” Kayla said.

Chelsea nodded and started to look out. “I’m a hot air balloon.” Thomas laughed amused.

Chelsea jumped back down and pointed in the direction to go. “We should head to Gondun, that way.” Kayla nodded and stood up. One hand still pointed towards Danny’s and the other pointed out and away to blow them in the direction the wanted to move.

They started off slowly, and Thomas interrupted the silence. “Ummm, guys.”

“We’re trying to concentrate. Don’t talk please.” Danny said.

On the ground the village were able to ready a catapult. It was loaded with tons of small rocks. The rock flew up to the makeshift hot air balloon that is Thomas. The began to pelt the three sitting in the basket breaking their concentration. Danny started loosing too much flame. The wind Kayla was creating to swirl the flames was swirling too fast and too high. The flames started to burn Thomas. Thomas couldn’t endure it for too long. He gave in and retracted his arms. The basket fell to the ground far below and a now unconscious Thomas fell right after it. Their brilliant escape plan, failed.
